Dissertation note: BA (Hons) in Heritage Studies. Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology, 2018 Summary: The subject of the big house in Ireland has been the subject of some discussion in the past and was once an important factor in the history of Ireland. With many of these houses now falling into ruins and obscurity, a part of Ireland's heritage is in danger of being forgotten. The importance of the ancillary buildings is usually over looked, with the main house itself being the subject of discussion. This dissertation hopes to tackle the importance of the ancillary buildings and focus on their importance and architecture by examining Castle Ellen as a case study. This dissertation will also look at the history of the Lambert family and their history with the house. Ireland's history with the estate buildings and their ancillary buildings will also be overviewed. It is important to look at Castle Ellen as it stands today and its process of restoration.
