Subject(s): Online resources: Dissertation note: BA (Hons) in Film and Documentary Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology 2019 Summary: After doing weeks of research for my dissertation I have decided to look comparably at some of the perceived weakness of Alfred Hitchcock’s young female characters as against his obsessive preoccupation with the strong matriarch character. Because little is known about Hitchcock’s private life, at least up until recently, I intend to delve deeper in order to discover how he treated the women in his life, such as his mother and wife, as well as the actresses in his films. There are two reasons why I have such an interest in learning more about this topic. The first is that through my watching of his films I have noticed many similarities in his depiction of women, old and young, in his films and would like to investigate whether or not this depiction of women coincides with his own views on women. Secondly, in light of the #MeToo movement, I believe it is important that the sexual violence against woman which is often brushed over, is highlighted. Recently, many actresses in Hollywood have come forward and discussed the sexual violence and abuse they have faced in the film industry, one of these woman being Tippi Hedren, who worked with Hitchcock in movies such as The Birds (1963) and Marnie (1964).
