Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology, 2021 Summary: The objectives in this paper are to delve deep into the advertising industry and to explore it from different angles. A historical knowledge of advertising is necessary to understand where modern advertising stems from, and how contemporary methods still retain the same core values of advertising from a century ago. It’s important to look at advertising both from the advertiser’s and the consumer’s viewpoints, to see if there is disharmony between an ad’s intent and its actual result. Following on from this, it’s also imperative to look into the effects that advertising can have, both on the individual consumers and on society as a whole, in order to truly understand and criticise how much power the advertising industry might hold. The main goal for this paper is to arrive at a conclusion as to whether or not advertising has influence over society, and if so, to what extent?
