Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology, 2021 Summary: In this dissertation the author explores the visual storytelling techniques of Roger Deakins’ cinematography in the 2017 science fiction film “Blade Runner 2049” directed by Denis Villeneuve. More specifically, he examine the camera movement, composition, lighting and colour in that film, and link their usage to a filmmaking technique or a visual storytelling theory. He is also touching on the production design side when it comes to the colour palette in the film. In order to do that, he researched different filmmaking techniques used in cinematography that manipulate with the viewer subconsciously and that are designed to evoke certain emotions in the viewer or have some deeper meaning.
