Subject(s): Dissertation note: BA (Hons) in Film and Documentary Studies Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology 2018 Summary: A portrayal of sadness bordering on fetishiztion permeates the protagonists of contemporary animations, notably Bojack Horseman and Rick & Morty, whose titular characters endure a brooding existential dread whilst juggling relationships with families, or in certain cases, exact duplicates of one another from alternate realities. With its philosophical framework based off existentialism's popularisers, Jean-Paul Sartre and Albert Camus, this dissertation exhibits thematic relationships that these animations share with existentialist criteria, analysing Sartrean theories of freedom and conciousness, based off 'Being and Nothingness' 91943) and 'Existentialism & Humanism' (1946) parallel to the animations characters
