(Hons) in Construction Economics and Quantity Surveying) -- Galway Mayo Institute of Technology, 2016 Summary: Design for manufacture and assembly is a process which is generally associated with engineering, its process allows items or parts of structures, machines large projects, etc, to be manufactured in a controlled area and assembled which in term reduces the construction period, Henry Ford Motor company was the first industrial giant to incorporate this process all the way back in the 1940s, In relation to the construction industry which this dissertation will focus primarily on it has become a well -known process some of the most famous structures known have been constructed using this process, this dissertation looks at the main factors which have made DFMA such an effective approach to construction and building efficiency, The DFMA process is put into place during the design stage of a construction project (Design and Build) but can also be incorporated at later stages of the design, it works best with the design and build method as large items of the building can be designed with DFMA in mind.
